According to Meyer and Land, “A threshold concept can be considered as akin to a portal, opening up a new and previously inaccessible way of thinking about something. It represents a transformed way of understanding, or interpreting, or viewing something without which the learner cannot progress.”
You can think of Threshold Concept as a conceptual gateway, till these fundamental concepts are not clear the learner cannot progress further (and still understand). Till these concepts are not clear they tend to be troublesome and once they are clear they become transformative.
To really understand self-directed learning ask yourself what could be its threshold concepts? To help you create a framework here are five questions, pondering on which will give you some ideas. We encourage you to discuss your thoughts.
